Abnormally Attracted to Sin (2009)

Since Tori Amos is going to release her first seasonal album soon, I'll review the album she released earlier this year. I personally love this album, and I think it's her best album since Strange Little Girls. Sonically, it's her most pop album yet. It's like from the choirgirl hotel and To Venus and Back, but with sweet, delicious sugar added to the mix.

I love how Tori has evolved as an artist. In the past few years, Tori has dabbled in soul, rock, pop, and now Christmas music (expect a review of Midwinter Graces in the near future). Of course, her unpleasable fanbase doesn't appreciate her latest albums (pre-MG), but I do!

I have sound to color synesthesia (that's when you think of certain colors while listening to music). I think of many colors while listening to this album. It's one of the most colorful albums I've ever heard.

Give - One of her best openers. I love how she sings give like GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEV.

Welcome to England - I love how "Give" segues into this. Before I got into Tori Amos, I heard this song in a car commercial. It was very distinct, and I was glad when the commercial came on. A few months later, I heard this song. When I heard the first few notes, I instantly knew this was the song. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least!

Strong Black Vine - My view on religion has changed over the last couple of months. Tori has influenced my life philosophy, especially with this song. At first I didn't pay attention to this song, but when I saw a live video of this I realized how good this song is. It's a very sexy song sonically, and for some reason, the title reminds me of licorice.

Flavor - At first it was one of my favs, but after listening to the rest of the album, I stopped paying attention to this song. Don't be mistaken though, it's still a good song. It's also one of my dad's favorite Tori songs.

Not Dying Today - This song really grew on me. I initially thought it was mediocre. Now I think it's a good American Doll Posse-like song.

Maybe California - One of her best ballads in my opinion. Although Tori sings it in her weird "accent" (like with "Give"). It can be a flaw for some, but I think it's one of this song's distinct characteristics.

Curtain Call - It's beautiful-sounding, but it hasn't grabbed my attention yet.

Fire to Your Plain - I LOVE this song. It sounds like pop with delicious filling, unlike the hollow, empty pop songs I hear on the radio.

Police Me - This song is one of her craziest. It's one of her love it or hate it songs. I'm with the former.

That Guy - Some people think this is her Tori-does-James-Bond-music song. It's one of her most-liked songs from this album. It's certainly a highlight.

Abnormally Attracted to Sin - It sounds like being trapped in a melony trance. It's one of those songs that take you on a mini-journey.

Mary Jane - It's a funny song about a boy who fools his mother into letting him bring pot into the house, when the mother thought he was talking about a girl. Even though it's just Tori and her Bosey, it doesn't sound out-of-place.

500 Miles - I find it underrated. It's very catchy and and an overall good-feel song. Knowing Tori, 500 Miles is probably about something dark.

Starling - It's the cousin of "Flavor". It's the perfect midnight song.

Fast Horse - Tori sounds like she's forcing her voice out. It's a flaw, but the instrumentation and lovely chorus makes up for it.

Ophelia - It's a pretty ballad, but there's nothing else to say.

Lady in Blue - A perfect way to end the album! This song makes me feel like floating in the sky while drinking something bubbly. Although blue is in the title, it's not the dominant color.

Oscar's Theme (bonus track) - It sounds like a hidden track that would play after 3 minutes of silence. It's just Tori, her piano, and water-like sound effects. I think it deserves to be on the main album, and not just some bonus track!

While the album is quite long (like her last three albums), I think that the songs are unique enough to not get unnoticed. It sorta reminds me of Bjork's Post, in how all of the songs sound different from each other. While many "Toriphiles" are disappointed in this album, I think it's one of her best, and I'm looking forward to what Tori will experiment with next. Psychadelica? Funk a la "Sweet the Sting"? Blues? Classical? Halloween music? Only time (or Tori) will tell.

I have taken a huge respite. You can blame Tori Amos for that. Anyways, I've decided to re-make this into solely a music blog. I'll eventually write reviews for albums and rave about my favorite artists (like the aforementioned redheaded pianist). First it was horror movies. Now it's music. What's next?
